MMC Elections 2016

THE FEDERATION WANTS MORE INDEPENDENT PRACTITIONERS REPRESENTATION IN THE MALAYSIAN MEDICAL COUNCIL (MMC)

5.4.2016, Kuala Lumpur

An unprecedented 40 candidates will be standing for the 9 elected posts (for Peninsular Malaysia) in the Malaysian Medical Council this year.

Independent private practitioners account for only 7 of the 33 members of the present Medical Council. The majority (22 of 33) are nominated representatives from government sector and public universities.

The MMC elections of 2015 was marked by claims of administrative and legal impropriety of the election process from the doctors, some of whom complained that they did not even receive their ballot papers.

The FPMPAM reiterates that it is of utmost importance that registered medical practitioners both in private and public service vote to ensure a balanced composition in the Medical Council. The voice of the independent private practitioners (accounting for more than 40% of the doctors in Malaysia) has been under-represented for too long and this should be rectified.

The medical fraternity today is faced with the massive issue of over production of medical graduates some of dubious standards. Major ethical issues have arisen from the escalating commercialization of medical care. Doctors have complained about increasing interference of proper medical treatment by middle-men and other healthcare related businesses. This will adversely affect the quality and continuity of care given to patients.

The Federation requests your support for the following candidates:

Dr. Chow Kim Weng (Steven), President FPMPAM, currently serving elected MMC Council Member - more
